Hillary to embrace her husband's legacy while ignoring her own
The big news out of HillaryWorld today is that her campaign has decided to embrace the legacy of Bill while pointing to her time in the White House as proof that she "can be trusted to handle the surprises and rigors of the job." According to Hillary staffers this will be the theme of her big close in Iowa and New Hampshire. A close I do not disagree with seeing as how a majority of the American people still have the warm and the fuzzy when it comes to Bill. However, Hillary does not simply want to use her husband's glow, she wants to use his successor's scowl. Hillary plans to take her argument a Bush-step, steeped in fear, too far. This from the WaPo:
And, as far as Hillary playing the 9/11-fear card, it worked for Bush, so why not deal the American people another hand? It's just one more example of the type of presidency we can expect from her. Who knows, maybe if Hillary does win she too will want to be known as a war-time president. Maybe she too will be looking for Congress to write her a blank check. After all, we all know how hard it is to remove a war-time president after a first term, just ask John Kerry.
Right after Christmas, these advisers said, Clinton plans to make the case on national security grounds, citing the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, as evidence that unexpected crises can arise. The argument is in some ways similar to the one President Bush made in 2004, when he campaigned on what he described as his proven leadership in the aftermath of the 2001 attacks and said the terrorist threat called for keeping him in the job.Hillary may want to embrace her husband's legacy, but Hillary has her own 9/11, national security legacy to point to. A legacy which involved writing a blank check to a president with clearly questionable motives. A legacy which allowed George Bush to go to war. This is how she reacted to an unexpected crisis. This is how she used her experience as co-president. This is the true legacy she is saddled with, no matter how hard she tries to hug her husband's.
