Divisive In Any Language

From EJ Dionne Jr.'s column in today's Washington Post:
[T]the best way to make English our unifying language is to avoid making language a divisive national issue. The 'representatives' who think they have nothing better to do than to enshrine into law (albeit toothless law) bullshit like English is the "common and unifying language of the United States" and declaring English to be our "national language" should first of all be chided for wasting taxpayer time and money, then given a refresher course on the whole idea of inclusion vs. division.
More importantly we need to watch how these Schiavo Champions use these proclamations in the future as precedents to further their agenda. Having their carefully chosen language written into law was a major part of the Religious Right's strategy for stripping away women's right to a legal abortion (and they have made HUGE strides toward their ultimate goal: banning abortion, then banning contraception, then banning sex altogether because who needs it when such things as "immaculate conception" really and truly exist in real life?). These proclamations are likely just the first baby step (like Bush's "guest worker program," which provides cheap labor with no say in how cheap laborers are treated) in a larger scheme towards further disenfranchising large portions of the population.
