Free Falling

I'm not really sure what George Bush is talking about when he states that the Iraqis "looked into the abyss as to whether or not they want a civil war or not and chose not to." I think the President needs to talk to a few more Iraqis, because after this weekend it looks more like the Iraqi people have held their noses, closed their eyes, and jumped headfirst into the abyss that is civil war. From the NYT:
Security in Baghdad seems to be deteriorating by the hour, and it is increasingly unclear who is in control.

American officials are now saying that militias are the No. 1 security problem in Iraq, more dangerous than suicide bombs or guerilla attacks.
- - -
The discovery of the 30 beheaded bodies, as well as the corpses of 10 other men found in Baghdad added to the hundreds of bodies that have recently surfaced on Baghdad's streets.
Call me a pessimist, but slogans, speeches, and platitudes will not stop the killing. I am ashamed of the damage we have wrought.

Please read more, but be forewarned, a heavy heart will follow.
